Asscher elevated at Responsible Jewellery Council

The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) has appointed World Diamond Council (WDC) president Edward Asscher as vice chairman.

The RJC held its first in-person board meeting since the beginning of the COVID pandemic on 6 October and released a statement on 1 November confirming the appointment.

Asscher is currently serving his second term as president of the WDC and was once the owner and operator of the Royal Asscher Diamond Company.

“I trust that my long experience serving the industry will contribute to meeting [the RJC’s] goals and those of its members,” he said.

Asscher joined the board of the RJC in June of this year, serving as representative of the trade association forum.

“Edward brings a distinguished and comprehensive career in the jewellery industry to our executive leadership on the board,” RJC chairman David Bouffard said following the announcement.

Marianne Zani, director of development and sourcing for Chanel, was also appointed to the RJC board at the 6 October meeting.

The RJC describes itself as the “leading standards organisation for the global jewellery and watch industry” and claims to feature 1,500 members.

In March of this year RJC executive director Iris Van der Veken resigned following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Bouffard, who at the time was serving as vice chairman, assumed Van der Veken’s position in April.
