Australian retailer takes a new approach to bridal jewellery

Australian jewellery retailer Moi Moi has launched a new ‘Bridal Borrow’ program, marking a dramatic change in approach to wedding and engagement adornments.

Moi Moi was founded in 2004 by Lauren Sommer and Alana Weirick and operates stores in Sydney and Melbourne, specialising in moissanite and lab-created diamond jewellery.

Customers who spend $10,000 in a single transaction, including the purchase of an engagement ring, are eligible for the program.

The program allows customers to reserve pieces from Moi Moi’s collection as a rental, with the only fee a $50 payment for administration and insurance purposes.

"As a family business, we feel privileged to be part of our clients’ special days. We believe that every milestone deserves to be celebrated in style, and this program empowers brides to do just that."

“I remember looking for jewellery for my own wedding and struggling to find beautiful pieces that aligned with both my budget and vision for the big day. I was reluctant to invest a huge amount into jewellery when I had our wedding and other expenses to think of,” Sommer told RagTrader.

“As a family business, we feel privileged to be part of our clients’ special days. We believe that every milestone deserves to be celebrated in style, and this program empowers brides to do just that.”

Fashion rental companies became increasingly popular during the pandemic, and in the US, companies like Rent The Runway, Flont, Haute Vault, and Switch offer one-off and subscription-based jewellery hire services.

In Australia, companies such as The Volte, Glam Corner, Threadicated, and Dress Hire AU have enjoyed similar success – with clothing and jewellery rental services appealing to younger consumers for various reasons.

“Now, if you're imagining a stuffy shop filled with someone's old formal gowns from the 1980s, you've got it wrong. These days, dress and clothing hire companies have changed. While you might find the odd archival piece, you're more likely to find an abundance of items from the latest designers — including all of those you never thought you could afford to wear,” writes Teneal Zuvela of Marie Claire.

“Instead of throwing a few hundred on a dress you don't particularly like, you can spend less and wear something you're completely in love with. And don't forget — hiring your clothing is a much more sustainable way to shop too.”

Borrowed pieces are available to purchase from Moi Moi after the rental for an ‘exclusive’ price.
