$12,000 up for grabs: Queensland’s buried treasure in the spotlight

Anticipation is building for the Queen Of Gems Jewellery And Design Awards, scheduled to be hosted on 13 July in Winton, Queensland.

The annual awards are a celebration of boulder opal – a unique gemstone that is formed in an ironstone host rock.

Boulder is found in different mining fields in Queensland, with common locations including Aramanga, Coroit, Quilpy and Yowah.

Hosted by the Queensland Boulder Opal Association, the awards are divided into four key categories – professional jewellers, emerging jewellers, wearable fashion and art.

Co-coordinator Natasha Taranto said that it was an event not to be missed for anyone passionate about opal.

"It’s such a rare and beautiful gemstone, and it’s great to have the opportunity to showcase some of the incredible pieces created using it."

“This awards show has been running since the Queensland Boulder Opal Association started, and it’s really a celebration of a special gemstone,” she told Jeweller.

“We’ve got categories for both professional and emerging jewellers, so there’s a chance for anyone working with jewellery to put forward their work. We’ve also got separate categories for accessories – so we see cool handbags, hats, and even wedding dresses!”

She continued: “It’s all inspired by boulder opal, which has grown in popularity over the past few years. It’s such a rare and beautiful gemstone, and it’s great to have the opportunity to showcase some of the incredible pieces created using it.”

The awards are hosted at the Waltzing Matilda Centre Art Gallery in Winton on 13 July. Entries close on Friday, 28 June.
