Lucara Diamond identified the stone during kimberlite processing from the site using X-ray transmission technology (XRT). The diamond is larger than the company’s other significant discoveries, which include the Sewelô (1,758 carats) and Lesedi La Rona (1,109 carats).
The Cullinan Diamond, unearthed in South Africa in 1905, is considered the largest gemstone-quality diamond ever recovered at 3,106 carats.
“We are ecstatic about the recovery of this extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond,” said CEO William Lamb.
“This find not only showcases the remarkable potential of our Karowe mine but also upholds our strategic investment in cutting-edge XRT technology. The ability to recover such a massive, high-quality stone intact demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach to diamond recovery.”
Lucara is expected to sell the diamond to HB Antwerp as part of an offtake agreement.
Botswana president Mokgweetsi Masisi handled the stone in a presentation, describing it as “overwhelming.”
