Perth Mint unveils uniquely Australian sea treasure

The Perth Mint has released eight limited edition collector coins featuring a turtle and glittering gemstones and pink diamonds.

Each coin is crafted from 10 ounces of 99.99 per cent pure gold and features 113 Argyle pink diamonds. Each Jewelled Turtle features a sea turtle surrounded by coral and dory fish, with 52 white diamonds atop its head and limbs and two emeralds for its eyes.

The coins are valued at $269,000, and the general manager of minted products, Neil Vance, said that the Jewelled Turtle coin is expected to be an instant hit with collectors.

This release is the seventh instalment in the Masterpieces Series. Previous additions include the Jewelled Snake and the Jewelled Koi.

“Six of the world’s seven species of sea turtles are found in Kimberley waters, and five of those are known to nest there, so they really are special animals to me. The intricacy of the Jewelled Turtle reflects our constant pursuit of innovation,” added Natasha Muhl of the Perth Mint’s design team.

“In this design we used hundreds of diamonds and gemstones to create the beautiful, sculpted body of the turtle. The finished piece is an extraordinary tribute to the beautiful, beloved and in many cultures, sacred sea creature.”

The coin bears the Dan Thorne effigy of King Charles III for the first time in the series.
