In February, Michael Hill International (MHI) was ordered to pay $2.25 million in damages in a dispute with a packaging supplier.
The case concerned sales agreements between MHI and Australian paper bag manufacturer Gispac Pty Ltd between 2014 and 2018. Gispac alleged that MHI violated clauses, and following a February judgement, the company lodged a Notice of Appeal in April.
The company has now reported that the NSW Court of Appeal has reduced MHI’s liability for damages to $359,858, plus interest.
Gispac was also ordered to pay MHI’s costs of the appeal; however, the initial trial costs are subject to further determination. The new decision is subject to appeal within 28 days.
In July, the chain announced that sales in Australia improved by 12 per cent over the past financial year, countering declines in New Zealand (12 per cent) and Canada (1.6 per cent).
