Industry mourning: BECKS’ Greville Ingham unexpectedly passes away

The Australian jewellery industry was left stunned on Sunday after word spread that BECKS managing director Greville Ingham passed away.

Educated at the University of South Australia in the 1990s, Ingham worked at the Greengate Group for 13 years, before returning to the local jewellery trade in late 2020.

Ingham joined Peter W Beck as national sales manager and held that role until April 2022.

He was appointed managing director, and oversaw an ambitious major rebranding to BECKS following the passing of his mother, Ann Beck, in September 2021 and his stepfather, Peter Beck, in December of the same year.

In an article written by Ingham for Jeweller in July 2022, he discussed his return to the company and plans for the future.

“I had returned to the business in November of 2020 as part of a plan to learn different aspects of the business over a few years, developing into a ‘general manager’ style role with help from my two sisters, Jenni and Carol, who are already very knowledgeable in their areas of the trade,” he explained.

He added: “Don’t forget your roots. Don’t forget that is what the business is founded on. Identify those legacy foundational attributes and protect them!”

In an article published a month earlier, Ingham discussed the rebranding project in-depth, again emphasising the significance of family.

"Our transition to BECKS reflects upon the fact that we are now in all ways truly the manifestation of a family business and we felt that should be reflected in our brand."

On Monday afternoon, the company released a statement expressing gratitude for the ongoing support of staff, customers, and suppliers.

"Carol and Jenni Beck are committed to ensuring the continued success of the business into the future, and deeply appreciate the ongoing support of our valued customers and suppliers," the statement reads.

"We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated staff for their unwavering support and efforts during this difficult time and in the days ahead."

"Our thoughts are with Greville’s wife, children, and extended family and friends. He will be profoundly missed."

The announcement was met with an outpouring of support from across the industry. Ingham took great pride in his work with the Australian Army Reserves, and was a frequent contributor and ardent supporter of this publication.
