Three men entered a home in the Adelaide suburb of Lightsview last week armed with a variety of weapons, holding the tenants hostage for 30 minutes.
Investigators have since revealed that the crime is believed to have been motivated by a $37,000 Rolex listing on Facebook Marketplace. The suspects tracked the address through a previous listing.
In an interview, the victim – who remains anonymous – said he hoped that people would learn from his experience.
"People with bad intentions essentially saw those listings and tried to arrange for an inspection and tried to get some more details, and obviously, they successfully did that," the victim told 9News.
"Previous listings online can still be seen unless you actually go into your profile to delete them. Definitely go into your profile and see if your listings are still there."
The Rolex had been sold three months earlier; however, the suspects took car keys, wallets, credit cards, and a mobile phone during the robbery.
Police recommended meeting in public spaces in daylight, ideally with security cameras nearby. Gathering personal information about a potential buyer before meeting and notifying others of your whereabouts are also encouraged.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
