Known as the Oriental Sunrise, the set contains two oval mixed-cut fancy vivid orange-yellow diamonds weighing 12.2 and 11.9 carats. At the 29 October auction, the set returned $USD8 million ($AUD12.11 million).
Many items featured at the Magnificent Jewels sale exceeded presale estimates, including a pair of jadeite and diamond earrings and a diamond and ruby pendant necklace.
With that said, a fancy colour diamond expected to lead the auction was “withdrawn due to a strategic decision”, according to reporting by Rapaport News.
A Cartier ring with a marquise brilliant-cut, 4.39-carat, fancy vivid blue diamond returned $USD3 million ($AUD4.54 million), falling short of its estimate.
Fancy colour diamonds will return to the auction block at the Magnificent Jewels hosted by Sotheby’s in Geneva on 13 November.
The auction will feature a 1.44-carat fancy red diamond set in a ring, entering the sale with a presale estimate of $USD2.1 million ($AUD3.18 million). A 16-carat very light pink diamond set in a pendant will enter the auction with the same estimate.
At the same event, a 31-carat fancy vivid yellow diamond set in a ring is expected to return $USD1.6 million ($AUD2.42 million).
