Fancy colour diamonds continue to headline auctions

A fancy colour blue diamond is expected to turn heads at an upcoming auction in New York City, entering the sale with an eye-opening presale estimate.

Christie’s will offer a 5.72-carat fancy intense blue diamond set in a ring at the December 10 Magnificent Jewels sale. The diamond is expected to return between $USD6 million ($AUD9.16 million) and $USD8 million ($AUD12.22 million).

The auction will include the sale of a collection of jewellery owned by designer Suzanne Belperron. Claibourne Poindexter, senior specialist for jewellery at Christie’s, said it was a collection that had been meticulously created.

“This remarkable collection exemplifies the art of jewellery collecting through the discerning eye of an American collector who views jewels as a true form of art,” he said.

“With a judicious and intentional approach, this collection spans iconic designs across centuries and includes one of the most impressive assemblages of Suzanne Belperron jewels ever to come to auction.”

Later this week, an unmounted 30.1-carat round brilliant-cut link pink diamond will be auctioned in Hong Kong.

The pink diamond is expected to return between $USD1.5 million ($AUD2.29 million) and $USD2.3 million ($AUD3.5 million). The stone is one of 160 items appearing at Bonhams’ Hong Kong Jewels and Jadeite auction on 28 November.

Stewart Young, director of jewellery, said it was an opportunity for collectors to acquire a rare stone.

“It is exciting to present the remarkable coloured diamond at auction, allowing the opportunity for collectors around the world to own such a coveted piece,” he said.

The pink diamond was sourced from the private collection of a prominent Asian collector who has owned it for more than 50 years.
