The 30.1-carat pink diamond returned $USD2.6 million ($AUD4 million) as one of 160 items to appear at the Hong Kong Jewels and Jadeite auction on 28 November.
The unmounted round brilliant-cut very light pink stone hit the auction block after spending more than 50 years in a private collection. Stewart Young, head of jewellery for Asia at Bonhams, said it was a pleasing result.
“We are absolutely delighted with the sale results, which reflect the quality of the pieces offered and the continued strong demand for coloured diamonds and gemstones,” he said.
“Particularly noteworthy is the outstanding result achieved for the exceptional 30.10-carat pink. It was exciting to present the remarkable coloured diamond at auction.”
Among the fancy colour diamonds to appear at auction was a cushion-shaped 6.51-carat fancy vivid yellow stone, set in a ring.
A ring featuring three rectangular radiant-cut diamonds – fancy pink, fancy deep yellow, and fancy intense yellow-green – more than doubled its presale estimate.
The auction returned $USD8.9 million ($AUD13.68 million) in total.
