The company traditionally hosts ten sights each year, selling most rough diamonds to sightholders via a contract system with specific purchasing commitments.
The first sight will begin on 20 January, with the final scheduled for 8 December. As reported by Rapaport News, De Beers has recently reduced rough prices by between 10 and 15 per cent, aiming to stimulate demand.
“On Monday, De Beers sightholders turned up at the first day of the miner’s December contract sale to find prices were 10% to 15% lower than before, insiders reported," writes Joshua Freedman.
"De Beers usually waits for the overall market to improve before making sharp price cuts. The company does not comment on its rough pricing at each sight, but a spokesperson said it had observed stabilisation in polished prices and a reduction in inventories.”
Russia’s leading diamond producer, Alrosa, reportedly likewise reduced prices. This follows a statement from the company’s CEO warning of a ‘crisis’ if the market does not improve.
