The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD is one of history’s most well-known volcanic events, burying Roman settlements such as Pompeii and Herculaneum in rock and ash.
Over the past two years, archeologists have uncovered a luxury bathhouse with hot, warm, and cold rooms, artwork, a plunge pool, and mosaic floors. The discovery offers remarkable insight into the lives of the wealthy thousands of years ago, including the jewellery they wore.
"The most powerful thing from these excavations is that stark contrast between the lives of the slaves and the very, very rich. And here we see it," archaeologist Sophie Hay told the BBC.
"The difference between the sumptuous life of the bathhouse, compared to the furnace room, where the slaves would be feeding the fire toiling all day.
"A wall is all that could divide you between two different worlds."
Two skeletons were discovered in the house clutching jewellery and coins. The gold coins are said to shine as if they were new, while a set of pearl earrings, necklace pendants, and intricate semi-precious gemstones have also been discovered.
Archaeologist Alessandro Russo said that discoveries of this nature were invaluable.
"When we find this kind of object, the distance from ancient times and modern times disappears, and we can touch a small piece of the life of these people who died in the eruption,” he explained.
The excavation is expected to conclude soon; however, additional discoveries have not been ruled out. The site will eventually be open to the public.
