The Today Show's Lisa Wilkinson presents the retail/fashion award to Alana Chang Weirick of Moi Moi
Sydney jeweller wins business award again
Posted September 27, 2011 | By Aaron Weinman
Moi Moi Fine Jewellery has won the City of Sydney Business Award in the retail/fashion category – for the second time.
The Sydney jeweller claimed the award from a field of 640 nominated businesses, with almost 67,000 votes cast across 22 categories.
Sisters and joint managing directors, Alana Chang Weirick and Lauren Chang Sommer, were elated at winning the award, presented to them at a gala awards night held at the Westin Hotel.
“This is recognition we will treasure for a long time as this time we were benchmarked against well-known jewellers,” said Chang Sommer. “To say the least, we were in a highly contested section.”
Judged by a panel of representatives specialising in innovation, small business and sustainability, the judge’s criteria encompassed business success, business planning and community participation.
Along with Moi Moi, seven other businesses were among the finalists for the retail/fashion category, including four other jewellers and three fashion retailers. This is the second time Moi Moi has won the award in retail/fashion, after winning in 2008.
Chang Sommer said she was pleasantly surprised to win the award again, considering the tough competition Moi Moi were up against and said “to be validated for our effort and recognised by peers and leaders in the community is a real honour.”
According to Chang Sommer, Moi Moi has placed a great emphasis on strategic online marketing campaigns and community awareness. This year, the sisters spearheaded a national modelling initiative, ‘The Search for Moi Moi Mademoiselle.’ The winner, announced in October this year, will become an ambassador for Moi Moi while securing a 12-month modelling contract.
Chang Sommer believes campaigns like this and online presence is pivotal in securing future success.
“The landscape has changed since 2008 with major online developments,” said Chang Sommer. “In the last year, we have developed a blog and have established the Moi Moi Facebook page.”
Aptly named Moi Moi, the store specialises in Moissanite jewellery. The sisters opened their boutique store in Sydney’s Queen Victoria Building in December 2004, approximately five months after they discovered the increasingly popular lab-created jewels. The pair have capitalised on their success, recently opening a second store at Carillon City in Perth.
“Last year we opened our first franchise store in Perth and we will continue to drive awareness of Moissanite and lab-created jewels in Australia,” Chang Sommer said.
