With the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings film series already retired and the Twilight series winding down, fantasy fans (some hysterical) have turned their attention to a new cinematic sensation, The Hunger Games.
The film adaptation of the successful young adult fiction series has become a box office sensation and is starting to make its presence felt in the world of jewellery as well.
The Hunger Games features strong motifs and symbolism and jewellery designers, hobbyist jewellers and fans have been inspired by the designs to create and sell their own versions of Hunger Games jewellery.
Handmade jewellery and craft website Etsy.com lists more than 3,000 jewellery pieces relating to the film and there are many pieces also being offered on eBay.
It seems that the film’s studio and distributor, Lionsgate, hasn’t addressed the growing number of jewellers and hobbyists profiting from the success of the film and its designs, perhaps because the jewellery trend has so far maintained more the feel of fan admiration rather than commercial opportunism.
Most of the jewellery designs Jeweller has seen is inspired by the ‘Mockingjay pin’, which the film’s protagonist wears.
The gorgeous golden bird-in-flight design is pictured on the original book cover and was physically reproduced by cinematic jewellery specialist Dana Schneider for the movie. The final design was cast in sterling silver and plated in gold.
