The organisation reportedly decided to provide the new service, starting 2 September, in a bid to support consumer confidence.
HRD Antwerp’s lab reported that synthetic diamonds were increasingly making their way into the diamond market, and while they currently only represent a small part of the market segment, their production was on the rise.
In accordance with the rules of the International Diamond Council, the HRD Antwerp certificate "looks noticeably different from the standard diamond certificate and mentions the clear wording 'Synthetic Diamond Certificate' on the cover.
Each synthetic diamond is laser-inscribed synthetic and the presence of the laser inscription is mentioned on the certificate, with a statement that the diamond has been lab-grown."
In addition, each Synthetic Diamond Certificate will include the same unique safety features as the standard HRD Antwerp natural diamond certificate.
HRD Antwerp also offers a screening service for HPHT and CVD synthetic diamonds. The service is designed to help diamond dealers confirm that the diamonds in a polished diamond parcel are all natural.
Founded in 1976, HRD Antwerp’s primary shareholder is the Antwerp World Diamond Centre, a non-profit foundation, which represents the Belgium diamond industry.
