New presentation format for 2014 jewellery fair

A number of new retail-focussed initiatives have been announced for next year’s jewellery fair on the Gold Coast.
The first jewellery trade fair for 2014 will not only see the return of the Spotlight Learning Exchange sessions – that proved popular at the Sydney jewellery fair in September – but will also feature a “Meet the Expert” lounge where jewellery retailers will be able to schedule one-on-one consultations with a number of business consultants before and after their presentations.

Expertise Events managing director Gary Fitz-Roy said that providing jewellery retailers with the opportunity to attend both the education seminars and have private discussions with industry experts would allow them to gain targeted advice about different retail strategies, hone skills and workshop ideas.

“We know from experience that retailers attending industry talks usually have questions or want to explore certain topics a little further than the top-line presentation, so our ‘Meet the Expert’ area ensures everyone has the opportunity to get the right advice they are seeking.”

While retailers will be able to seek expert advice for their own specific needs, more importantly, there is no cost for the one-on-one consultations.

As previously reported by Jeweller, the spotlight sessions take place on the show floor, encouraging a more relaxed environment than traditional seminar presentations.

Fitz-Roy said the comments he received after the fair in Sydney about the new format convinced him that the informal setting worked extremely well.

“Unlike the very formal and sometimes intimidating atmosphere that a seminar room can create, the spotlights are very targeted and intimate, allowing for more exchange between the speakers and fair visitors,” he said.

First guest speaker confirmed

Bryan Young, founder and director of business consultancy Retail Rescue, has been confirmed as the first spotlight presenter who will be available for consultations with retailers.

Young has 30 years experience working in the retail industry in both sales floor and management positions. He has worked specifically with the jewellery industry for four years.

When commenting on why it was important for him to be involved in the sessions at the jewellery fair, he said that a recent article on jewellermagazine.com, Jewellery retailer calls for help, revealed that many jewellery retailers were in strong need of help.

“One of the main reasons I started Retail Rescue was to help others in need, as I am often deeply saddened by the amount of retail businesses having to close their doors, when most of those that do so could have been saved,” Young said.

He will make two presentations at the event: “Do it yourself business assessment – how to determine what is holding you back” will look at cash-flow planning, market research, marketing, stock control, store presentation and staff performance; and “Loyalty marketing made personal again” will discuss how to build a client base and loyalty program that can be marketed to in a non-obtrusive manner and even strengthen relationships in the process.

Retail Rescue was founded in 2004 and provides advice on a range of areas including management training, cash-flow planning and management, sales training, stock control and merchandising.

The 2014 Australian Jewellery Fair will be held from Sunday 23 to Monday 24 March at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.
