Maleficent inspires bewitching jewellery range

Walt Disney’s latest movie Maleficent has cast its spell on the jewellery world with a collaboration between the film company and a London-based jewellery business.

The collection by Crow’s Nest Fine Jewelry draws inspiration from the movie’s protagonist Maleficent – the evil queen in the Sleeping Beauty fairytale – that is played by Angelina Jolie.

Jewellery designer Daniel Belevitch used the elaborate costumes in the film, which was directed by Robert Stromberg, as motivation for the seven-piece range.

Featuring statement rings, bracelets and ear cuffs, the jewellery collection epitomise the beauty and danger of the vengeful witch.

“She’s a dark character but with a beauty as well. I think she’s misunderstood and we can learn something about ourselves from her. I hope my interpretation of the character, that I tried to capture within the jewellery, reflects how other people feel too, dark but beautiful,” Belevitch told Vogue UK.

Set in rhodium and complemented by black diamonds and pear-shaped onyx, the designs illustrate the prominent motifs in the film such as fire, dragons, thorns and feathers. The range also includes a statement ring showcasing white gold and sapphires. Prices range from $4,000 to $22,000.

Increased popularity in the fantasy genre has sparked the launch of numerous jewellery ranges. As previously reported by Jeweller, the Game of Thrones collaboration between HBO and Canadian jeweller Pyrrha resulted in a line of rings and necklaces. The pieces showcased interpretations of the families’ signet heraldry from the television series’ fictional world.

Similarly, The Hunger Games trilogy has also inspired jewellers. Although no official partnership has emerged, hobbyist jewellers have capitalised on the symbolism featured in the multimedia franchise.
