This became apparent following some industry research conducted by Jeweller that showed how few retailers these days considered cheap imports to be a threat to independent jewellery businesses. Jewellery chain stores, which five to 10 years ago were the big bogeyman, also didn’t rank highly as a threat in the industry survey.
The results prompted a review of our magazine archives to see what was making the news 10 years ago. It made for such interesting reading and analysis that it was decided a monthly column called ‘10 years ago’ would be created.
The Jeweller team has always viewed the publication as being a journal of record for the Australian and New Zealand jewellery industries and therefore each month we will provide a snapshot of the major news stories that were published in the same month one decade earlier.
Apart from being an entertaining read – bringing back memories for many jewellers and suppliers – it might allow readers to judge whether things have changed and/or whether history really does repeat itself.
