The Salera’s Jewellmasters in Maribyrnong’s Highpoint Shopping Centre was robbed at 2:30pm on 17 October when a man jumped over the counter and stole diamond jewellery valued at more than $100,000.
Storeowner Alfredo Salera told 9 News his 82-year-old wife attempted to stop the assailant and was violently pushed to the ground during the attack.
“I heard screaming inside the shop and it was my wife. She was very, very upset because she tried to stop the man, but she was not able to. I saw the man run like a wild bull into the corridor and disappear,” Salera said.
“This was a tragic situation… It all happened in about 20 seconds.”
Salera took his wife to the hospital where she was treated for bruising on her arm and back, she was reportedly “very shaken” by the assault.
Detective Senior Constable Dean Scano also spoke with 9News about the ongoing investigation and stated it was a “brazen, pre-planned crime.”
“He would have had to have done a fair bit of pre-planning to know where the emergency exit was. He had an accomplice who was waiting at a getaway point.”
The man fled the scene in a white 1997 Honda Accord, which was later recovered.
Victoria Police has released the CCTV footage from the robbery, as well as other footage from Highpoint that it hopes will help identify the perpetrator.
Investigators are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at crimestoppersvic.com.au
