Twin HK jewellery shows attract 4,600 exhibitors

This month’s twin Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) trade shows are set to form the world’s largest annual jewellery marketplace once again, featuring more than 4,600 exhibitors from 48 countries.

Spanning seven days, the sixth Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem and Pearl Show (IDGPS) will run first from 26 February to 2 March at AsiaWorld-Expo. Following on, the 36th Hong Kong International Jewellery Show (HKIJS) will open from 28 February to 4 March at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

This year’s exhibitor numbers across both shows have increased slightly compared to the 2018 edition, which also had record-breaking attendance in 87,000 registered buyers from 145 countries. Last year, Australian attendees accounted for approximately 1,100 buyers, and 18 exhibitors.

The HKTDC has also collaborated with the Japan Pearl Exporters’ Association and the Japan Pearl Promotion Society, to create a trade partnership seeing the involvement of 130 Japanese pearl and jewellery exporters at the show.

Specialty zones and initiatives

New to the fair last year, was the ‘IT Solutions for Jewellery’ zone, which will once again feature the latest technology and solutions for the trade.

The Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association and the Italian Exhibition Group SpA will combine to present the ‘T-GOLD+METS’ pavilion, featuring international exhibitors of professional jewellery and watchmaking machinery, equipment, technology and supplies.

New to the show this year is the formation of the ‘Amber Jewellery’ zone, which will showcase distinguished amber jewellery from Korea, Italy, Lithuania, Poland and the US.

Other themed zones feature the ‘Hall of Extraordinary’ to display valuable and unique pieces from more than 100 top-tier jewellery companies, while the ‘Hall of Fame’ will spotlight renowned jewellery brands.

In addition, the HKIJS includes a ‘World of Glamour’ zone, showcasing the haute craftsmanship of Hong Kong jewellers, and the ‘Hall of Time’, dedicated to luxury watches and timepieces.

IDGPS and continued support

At AsiaWorld-Expo, the IDGPS will showcase raw jewellery materials, including loose diamonds, precious stones, semi-precious stones and pearls.

Organisers have designated three zones themed as; ‘Hall of Fine Diamonds’, bringing together the world’s top diamond suppliers; ‘Treasures of Nature’, dedicated to finest-coloured gems; and ‘Treasures of Ocean’, displaying quality pearls.

Both shows – which were split in 2014 in response to increased attendee numbers – have again secured the support of global industry leaders and associations, including the Colombia’s ACODES, Antwerp World Diamond Centre, International Coloured Gemstone Association, Israel Diamond Institute, Japan Jewellery Association, New York Diamond Dealers Club, Tanzanite Foundation and India’s Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council.

This year’s 20th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition will be divided into ‘Open Group’ and ‘Student Group’ categories, with the theme being ‘Be Connected, Be United’. Designs of the finalists will be on display, with results to be announced at a press conference during the event period.
