MARCH SPOTLIGHT:
BUDJ JONES seldom make mistakes with his favourite tool, starrett dividers.
BUDJ JONES Works at: Brinkhaus Jewellers, Perth
Age: 60 Years in trade: 30 years Training: On-the-job training First job: Peter Meier Goldsmith in 1988 |
Favourite gemstone:Tsavorite garnet. That vivid green held me straight away! Favourite metal:18-carat yellow gold. It’s quite a forgiving metal. Favourite tool:Starrett dividers for precision measuring. I seldom make mistakes with it! Best new tool discovery:The laser welder. It creates seamless joins for resizes and gives you the ability to re-set stones, in their mounts, without damaging the stones. Best part of job:Stone setting; you’re a step away and the job’s done. Worst part of job:Polishing. If you’ve got an apprentice, that’s their job! Best tip from a jeweller:I got this advice from the fellow who taught me, Peter Meier: there are no shortcuts. If you make a mistake, knuckle down and re-do it until you get it right. Best tip to a jeweller:Stand up and stretch! Biggest health concern on the bench:The polishing dust. Love jewellery because: In this industry, we’re catering to future promises. You agree to make something beautiful for the client and to see their joy [when it’s finished], that’s wonderful. |
