SIGNATURE PIECE: ILLOURA RING WINNER – FANCY COLOUR, DIAMOND GUILD AUSTRALIA AWARDS 2013Handcrafted in 18-carat white and rose gold and set with 3 carats of rare Argyle pink and blue diamonds, the Illoura ring was inspired by the colours of a clear blue sky, down into red Australian earth – the very earth where these rare and beautiful diamonds were created. |
Favourite gemstone:Tourmaline because of the range of colours and bi-colour stones, which allow for design versatility. Favourite metal:Platinum, as it keeps its polish and because it becomes sticky when molten hot and then quenched. Favourite tool:My father Rob Ely’s saw frame. He founded York Jewellers in 1974 and has inspired me throughout my whole career. The saw frame reminds me where I have come from. Best new tool discovery:Laser machine. Best part of job:Creative freedom. Worst part of job:Bookkeeping! Best tip from a jeweller:The best guidance I received was from Darren May, my teacher at TAFE. He mentored me through my early years, particularly during my experiences at the WorldSkills competition. He pushed me to go beyond my comfort zone. Best tip to a jeweller:The ‘sticky platinum’ technique. When you pinch together two pieces of platinum with carbide tip tweezers, then heat to red-hot and quench, the platinum pieces will stick to each other. Biggest health concern on the bench:Never had any. Love jewellery because: It allows me to be creative and connect with people, all while bringing a piece of art to life. |
