A Nine News report identified the man as Daniel Ede, 37, an employee of MBC who claimed to have been held at gunpoint by Karl Kachami, 48, as he stole gold bullion, jewellery and cash from a safe at the business' Collins Street office.
A significant proportion of the stolen goods and cash, as well as a loaded handgun and stolen numberplates, were later found by police at a rural address in the town of Dollar in the Gippsland region.
Sazz Nasimi, a legal representative for MBC, previously told The Age that security was usually tight at the office and that “protocols were not followed” during the course of the robbery.
Ede was arrested at his home in the suburb of Donvale in Melbourne’s east on Tuesday 12 May, according to a statement from Victoria Police. He was subsequently charged with aggravated burglary, theft, perjury and firearms offences, and appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later that day.
Both Ede and Kachami have been remanded in custody until they face court again in July.
Armed Crime Squad detectives have also released CCTV footage of a white Holden Commodore ute, which they allege was driven to the address where the stolen goods were found shortly after the robbery, and have appealed for information.
