The 14.60-carat 'Freedom of India' diamond is claimed to be the largest polished CVD lab-created diamond on record and was certified by the International Gemological Institute in August.

Lab-created diamonds increase in size

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has certified a 14.60-carat lab-created diamond, which it claimes is the largest polished stone to be produced via the chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process.

The diamond has been certified as VS2 clarity, F colour and named 'Freedom of India' to mark the diamond jubilee of Indian independence.

It was manufactured by Ethereal Green Diamond, an India-based company.

"With such advanced technologies and methods, we look forward to creating more of such stellar creations"

Hirav Anil Virani, CEO of Ethereal Green Diamond, said, "We are extremely happy to share that our technical expertise has been at par with global players and with such advanced technologies and methods, we look forward to creating more of such stellar creations."

In a media release promoting the certification, Tehmasp Printer, managing director of IGI India, said the country was "on its way to become the heart and soul of the global gem and jewellery industry."

He added, "Our artisans, technologies and the vision to become the best is what leads us. IGI is proud to be able to assist, guide and be an integral part of this journey."

Shanghai Zhengshi Technology claimed the previous CVD size 'record' in November 2020, with a 12.75-carat stone cut from a 46.20-carat CVD-grown rough crystal.

That stone was certified by IGI Hong Kong and was also VS2 clarity, F colour.

Prior to the IGI certified stones, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) recorded its largest certified lab-grown diamond in June 2020, as reported in its quarterly journal Gems & Gemology.

"A larger CVD-grown diamond was recently submitted to the GIA laboratory in Carlsbad: a round brilliant with VS2 clarity and M colour weighing just over 7 carats. This 7.07-carat CVD-grown diamond came to the Carlsbad laboratory undisclosed as CVD, but advanced testing correctly identified this diamond’s origin,” the journal's Winter 2020 issue reported.
