JMF to launch Makers Mark

The Jewellery Manufacturers Federation of New Zealand (JMF) will showcase its new Makers Mark at this year’s New Zealand Jewellery Fair (NZJF), where it will be available for members to buy for the first time.
Designed as a quality mark, the Makers Mark will help distinguish New Zealand-made jewellery from jewellery made in other parts of the world.

Greg Jones, president of the JMF, said the Makers Mark would increase confidence in locally manufactured jewellery.

“The Makers Mark has been designed as a response to the influx of jewellery made overseas that is of inferior quality,” said Jones. “New Zealand makes good jewellery and we want people to have confidence in what they buy.”

The Makers Mark stamp can be placed on, or in, any piece of jewellery whether it is cast or handmade. It has been designed to be punched into precious metals and alloys such as gold, platinum, silver and palladium.

Only pre-approved JMF members are eligible to use the Makers Mark. To ensure the high standard of work that is associated with the Makers Mark, JMF members will have to undergo a stringent evaluation process before they are given license to use it.

Jones explains: “JMF will lease the Makers Mark stamp to a jeweller for a small fee and the jeweller is allowed to use the stamp provided they measure up to the standards.”
