The Young Jewellers' Facebook page is continually growing in numbers and interaction between members

Young Jewellers Group hits three tonne

The Young Jewellers Group (YJG) reached 300 members last week.
From its humble beginnings earlier this year, the YJG page on social networking site Facebook has grown to accommodate over 300 followers, with members interacting daily on issues including jewellery manufacturing and jewellery apprenticeships.

After Jeweller editor, Coleby Nicholson called for young jewellers’ to unite under an informal banner, members and bench jewellers’ Ewen Ryley and Brett Low have managed the increasingly-popular Facebook forum. The pair recently launched Jewellers’ Collective, which provides jewellers’ of all ages and specialisations with a networking platform.

To continue developing the association, Ryley and Low intend to establish a formal Board of Mentors for the group.

“The plan is to make the YJG an exclusive area of Jewellers’ Collective,” Ryley said. “We have got a couple of industry leaders lined up for the Board of Mentors, so apprentices and students will feel less pressured about posting comments.”

After passing the 300-mark, Ryley thanked everyone involved with the group.

“What a fantastic milestone this is,” Ryley said. “It is so good to have a place for young jewellers’ and the more experienced to connect and share knowledge, stories and all the weird and wonderful things our trade involves.”

Young jeweller member, Giselle Devereux said the idea for the YJG was a great way for jewellers’ across the nation to connect. She added that the interaction between members has been informative and entertaining.

“This is a great opportunity to talk with other jewellers’ as it can be a little isolating in Tassie,” Devereux said in response to Ryley’s post. “Brett and Ewen have been most welcoming and it seems like there is a bit more honesty in the comments also.”
