A decade ago, Swiss designer Lucien Vouillamoz began creating a timepiece based on the theory of ancient water clocks. Today, his ideas have come to fruition with the launch of the HYT H1 wristwatch.
Resembling a futuristic design that would feel at home on a Hollywood sci-fi movie set it uses the principles of fluid dynamics to tell the time, first utilised by the ancient Egyptians.
The centrepiece of this revolutionary and intriguing wristwatch is its fluorescent liquid perimeter featuring two scientifically-designed fluids. The separation between the two liquids is ensured by the positive and negative polarity contained in the molecules in both, which make them repel each other’s edges like two magnets.
Originally, incorporating water to tell time was done using gravity and volume, however, translating those principles into a horizontal format, such as those in a watch, required a new way of thinking.
To achieve the desired results, tiny bellows, inspired by sensors used by NASA, were created to control the fluids’ movement. Their specially researched shape allows for the reduction of energy required for their compression, absorbs shocks and ensures waterproofing.
The rear of the watch features a clear panel, showcasing the mechanics of the design, which is mechanical hand wound and features a 65-hour power reserve.
The high-end luxury watch has an entry price point of around $34,000 and is available in four models, including titanium and gold.
