Speaking at the recent D: All Things Digital conference – an annual gathering of technology and media executives – Cook said, “Wearables are incredibly interesting … it could be a profound area,” adding that wearable computing was “ripe for exploration, and it’s ripe for us to get excited about.”
He then made reference to the wrist being “natural,” which is something Macworld senior writer Lex Friedman believed indicated the development of a smartwatch.
Furthermore, journalist for The Independent, Majid Mohamed, commented that Cook reassured investors that the company had not lost its touch and had several “game changers” on the horizon.
Mohamed said Cook's remarks came “at a time when investors in the technology company have been rattled by lack of new product launches and a fall in profits this year for the first time in a decade.”
He added that while Apple continued to dominate in the tablet computer and smartphone markets, analysts believed it needed to innovate once again rather than rely on updates or existing products to stay ahead of the competition.
During the conference, Cook also revealed that the company had made nine business acquisitions since October 2012. He would not disclose what acquisitions were made, and said the buys would be announced “only when [Apple had] to.”
The D: All Things Digital conference was established in 2003 and brings together influential figures from the media and technology sector. It is held in California.
