New focus for Sydney jewellery fair

International Jewellery Fair (IJF) organiser Expertise Events has announced the inclusion of a new Timepiece Pavilion at this year’s show.

Expertise Events managing director Gary Fitz-Roy explained that the pavilion would be given a prominent position at the event and provide visitors with the opportunity to view the latest 2017 and 2018 watch and clock releases.

“This is about putting a focus on a traditional sector that has been knocked around from the introduction of mobile telephones and now smartwatches," Fitz-Roy said, adding, “Internationally, there is a demand for focus on these products, which makes this a great opportunity.”

The Timepiece Pavilion has been described by Expertise Events as a “one-off opportunity” for visitors and exhibitors.

This announcement also follows news that Showcase Jewellers has joined the local industry’s two other buying groups, Nationwide Jewellers and Leading Edge Group Jewellers, in support of the IJF. Each group will have an exhibition space during the three-day event.

As previously reported by Jeweller, the IJF will take place at the re-developed International Convention Centre (ICC) at Darling Harbour from 26 August to 28 August.

The fair will also run in conjunction with the inaugural Jewellery Design Awards (JDA), which boasts a prize pool of more than $80,000.

Registration for the awards program is now open and each category winner receives a minimum prize of $2,500 in cash or product, with the overall Supreme Award winner receiving two airline tickets to Baselworld flying business class with Etihad Airways.

Fitz-Roy said JDA winners would be revealed at an evening ceremony held at the ICC on Saturday 26 August.
