Nationwide kicks off apprentice support program

Applications are now open for the Nationwide Jewellers apprentice support scheme, with budding jewellers again encouraged to take advantage of the buying group’s financial assistance program.

The scheme, developed with the aim of providing financial support to young people in the jewellery industry commenced in 2009 and is now in its 10th year of operation.

"As a major player in the jewellery industry, we recognise our obligation to support and encourage young people enhancing their skills and experience."
Colin Pocklington, Nationwide Jewellers managing director

As in previous years, retail members are required to nominate their jewellery and watchmaker apprentices, who will then receive either a $500 Australian Jewellers Supplies tools voucher or $400 in cash towards fees and expenses.

The program is open to any apprentice who is enrolled in a recognised course and employed by a Nationwide member.

Nationwide Jewellers managing director Colin Pocklington said it was important to continue providing support for upcoming talent in the industry.

“As a major player in the jewellery industry, we recognise our obligation to support and encourage young people enhancing their skills and experience,” Pocklington explained.

“Although trading in the jewellery industry has been flat for quite a few years, the one area that continues to grow is custom design and remakes. Having enough apprentices is essential if the industry is going to meet demand in the years ahead,” he added.

More support

Entries are also open for Nationwide’s Apprentice of the Year award, with the winner to be announced at the Sydney International Jewellery Fair in August.

In addition, the buying group will present a $1,000 cash prize to the winner of its Rising Star award, which is open to members 25 years and under.

Pocklington said changes to the jewellery apprentice landscape in the last 12 months had proven beneficial to the industry.

“I understand that some TAFEs have now introduced a varied form of the Certificate III course. Students do the academic part of the old course compressed into the first year, then do two years working as an apprentice. One of our members employed one of these new apprentices last month.” he said.

“For our industry to grow and prosper, we are going to need more highly trained professionals.”

Nationwide represents 405 members and 468 stores across Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

Nominations for the scheme close on 30 March 2018.
