‘Magnificent’ $26 million blue diamond highlight of auction

Coloured gemstones continue to headline auctions, with an 8-carat blue diamond necklace recently selling for US$20.5 million (AU$26.8 m).

The fancy, vivid blue diamond pendant designed by London-based Moussaieff Jewellers sold at the Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in Hong Kong on 29 May for US$2.5 million (AU$3.2 m) per carat.

The necklace also featured a 1.6-carat intense pink diamond that was mounted in gold.

Christie’s deputy chairman and director of Jewellery Asia Vickie Sek said the auction demonstrated quality jewellery was still in demand.

“In a selective market, the sale saw healthy demand from collectors and professionals alike who bid for top quality jewellery and gemstones,” Sek said.

“We look forward to the continuation of our jewellery spring season at Christie’s Paris, New York and London.”

Other coloured diamond sales at the auction included an ‘exclusive’ multi-coloured diamond and seed pearl bracelet, which sold for US$4.6 million (AU$6.1 m). Designed by Boghossian, the bracelet featured diamonds in red, pink, blue, violet, green, orange and yellow.

In other auction news, a watch that once belonged to iconic ‘King of Cool’ actor Steve McQueen will be up for grabs in October.

The Rolex Submariner watch will highlight Phillips New York Watch auction on 25 October. It is expected to fetch US$300,000 – US$600,000 (AU$390,000 – AU$784,000).

According to the auction house, the watch was gifted from McQueen to his personal stuntman Loren Janes with the inscription “To Loren, the best damn stuntman in the world. Steve”.

The watch will be sold with a letter signed from Janes, attesting its authenticity, along with a letter and photos from Rolex documenting the timepiece’s history.
