Kai-Christian Helms, senior marketing manager Casio Europe, confirmed the news to WatchPro Germany. Helms cited the event’s new schedule, 30 April to 5 May, as the reason for the decision.
Seiko used the same justification for its decision to withdraw from Baselworld in November. The dates coincide with Golden Week, a Japanese holiday period.
Citizen is now the only major Japanese watch manufacturer exhibiting at Baselworld.
Casio will present its new collections at the Inhorgenta Munich event, held from 14–17 February. Seiko will also exhibit its brands Lorus and Pulsar at Inhorgenta – the first time it has done so in five years.
In order to address exhibitor concerns, the 2021 edition of Baselworld will be changed a again and held several weeks earlier than the May dates – though still later than its traditional March timeslot.
Shift in focus
Baselworld reported last month that the number of exhibitors registering for its Gems & Pearls section in 2020 had increased by 50 per cent. More than 75 jewellery brands and 30 loose gem companies exhibited at this year’s event.
The news followed the announcement that Gems & Jewellery exhibitors would be relocated to the more central Hall 2, and grouped together on a single level with direct access to the main watch exhibition space in Hall 1.
Michel Loris-Melikoff, managing director Baselworld, said, “All players in the Gems & Pearls sector participate and benefit from the plurality of Baselworld. In recent months, I have travelled extensively in Asia, India, Europe and around the world to meet personally with the players in the Gems & Pearls sector and better understand their specific business needs.
“Through listening, dialogue and creativity, we have been able to reposition our offers to better meet their expectations… The entire sector can count on the support of Baselworld,” he added.
In July, Baselworld joined CIBJO, the international jewellery confederation, as a commercial member in order to strengthen ties with the gem and jewellery industry.
